Wanted-Montana seeking Hardened Criminals

The Two Rivers Detention Facility in Hardin, MT has generated a lot of media attention across the world.  As the prison facility tries to find some new homes from many unlikely contenders.  It has even drawn the attention of media outlets such as, Al-Jazeera News Network about hosting the detainees from Guantanamo.

It is doubtful the prison can obtain these prisoners because the state’s congressional delegation disagrees on the issue.  This leaves the city and county without a source of revenue- it needs.

I cannot understand the situation because the prison was built in 2006. There were studies conducted by the Martz and Schweitzer administrations for 3,500 new beds needed by 2025. Why waste taxpayer’s dollars? The state continues to say it doesn’t want the space right now.

While most states and communities are having problems finding places to house their criminals we’re actually LOOKING for criminals for our housing!!

I think Montana needs to come up with a useful arrangement to assess the problem.  The City of Hardin will continue to persist on new and creative ideas.

According to an article in the Billings Gazette:

Greg Smith, Two Rivers Authority executive director, said “the Hardin center is built to American Correctional Association and federal Bureau of Prisons Standards and can be operated at that level.”

If the state wants higher standards, they will come at a greater cost. However, that cost will be paid by Montana taxpayers, and the public reaction to last week’s proposals is that people don’t want to foot the bill, he said.

This leaves Hardin without anything since the prison was supposed to bring in 100 high paying jobs to the community.  The Two Rivers Detention Facility will seek out of state contracts for inmates.  It has also looked into a multimillion deal with Alaska to house prisoners.

Time will tell what will become of the Hardin prison in the near future.

  1. Maybe the mice and rats will move in, being that it is sitting empty.
